" “I grew up in an African house, true enough,” Weedie says. “But at the same time when I walked out of my door, I had a whole different world. I grew up in the Hip-Hop age.” That’s a paradox they’ve been living with all their lives.
But it’s one to which these uniquely placed artists have reconciled themselves. Masters of their craft — and just as comfortable on snare and guitar as on calabash and kora — they’re one more example of artists experimenting with a fusion of African and American musical influences. Inheritors of those two traditions, they move between them like there were no boundaries at all."

Provided the communiques pass censorship at correction facilities, they are printed and handed to inmates within the space of three days. […] It has already delivered more than 180,000 messages. […] FSIN Pismo, which has a logo similar to the Russian Postal Service, began a test phase in St. Petersburg's Kresty and Moscow's Vodnik pretrial-detention centers at the beginning of this month. The extreme waves that batter the Irish coast

Presents a new paper publshed in Natural Hazards and Earth Systems Sciences which describes more than 50 historical extreme-wave events in Irish waters and explains the differences between tsunami, rogue wave, storm wave and surfer's wave.

"Trawling through sources such as buoy data, lighthouse and tsunami records, scientific and media reports and even stories of legend, the researchers looked to classify the events as storm waves or surges, tsunamis or more localised and unpredictable “rogue” waves."
"Overall what stood out from our look at extreme wave events is that we are now convinced there are more rogue waves off the west coast than anticipated, and that phenomenal sea states and swell do occur.”
