Hawaiian surfer Garrett McNamara rides monster waves off Nazare, Portugal

This photo shows the biggest wave ever ridden. The record was set by Garrett McNamara off the coast of Nazaré in Portugal, a surf spot famous for its huge waves. This photo gives an overview of the size of some rogue waves that arise in the middle of the ocean.

"The veteran surfer Garrett McNamara looks likely to have broken the world record for the highest wave ever ridden. He caught the wave off the coast of Nazaré in Portugal on Monday (January 28). It was reportedly 100ft high (30.48m), although that is subject to verification."

Presents an article which indicates that a research center dedicated to the study of rogue waves opened in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia.

Extract:


"The center will focus on the thorough research of extreme waves in the oceans," Russia's Far Eastern Federal University in Vladivostok said in a statement.

"The center will also work on the prediction of this dangerous phenomenon and the development of protective measures," the statement said.

Robot Glider Detects Rogue Waves and Other Ocean Anomalies Missed by Satellites

Presents an article about a submarine robot, the "Papa Mau", which has completed its 16,668-kilometer scientific expedition across the Pacific Ocean last month. The use of these robots allows to detect rogue waves and other ocean anomalies which disturb the maritime traffic.

“The speed and directions of currents have major effects on the shipping industry, oil and gas and marine operations, as well as global weather,” Vass says. “The robot gliders’ ability to show measurements will change the way many of these industries work in the future.”
