WEISER, Rosy, The French dis-connection: Au Midi to give diners what
they love to hate about French eaters: foie gras, snails and frog legs, Santa Cruz Sentinel, March 14, 2012 .
Abstract : Michel
Loubiere, co-owner of Au Midi, a French restaurant in Aptos, decided to
organize a dinner called “Everything We Hate about the French”.
Quotation : « APTOS
-Americans have a long-standing fascination with all things French, from the
country's legendary wine to the romance evoked even by mention of the famed
city of Paris , to intense interest in French cultural icons like
Napoleon and Brigitte Bardot.
Fascination and disdain sometimes go hand-in-hand,
though, and Michel Loubiere, co-owner of Au Midi, a French restaurant in Aptos,
felt it was time to do something -- his tongue firmly in his cheek.
"Enough is enough," the Frenchman
announced in an email invitation sent to customers for a dinner set for next
Wednesday called Everything We Hate' about the French.
The four-course meal is "by reservation only,
attitudes welcome" and will feature snail, frog legs and foie gras -- all
classic French dishes that inspire a range of emotions, from the gourmand's
excited mouthwatering delight to squeamish expressions of disgust from less
adventurous diners.
The menu, prepared by Loubiere's wife, Muriel, the
chef and restaurant co-owner, will be a departure from her standard fare -- Mediterranean-inspired
southern French cuisine with a multi-cultural flair.
"People call the French frogs,' but we never
have frog on our menu," Michel Loubiere said. "Snails and frogs are
products that are not part of the French staple for 30 or 40 years, but here it
still represents French cooking," he said.
"The last time I had frog's legs I was
probably a teenager," he added. "Snail
is the same."»
