Soda sales are slipping (but the average american still drinks more than a can a day)

• OLSEN, Hanna Brooks. Soda Sales Are Slipping (But The Average American Still Drinks More Than A Can A Day), Blisstree, March 22th 2012.

Abstract:

This study shows that prevention campaigns have allowed changing consumer behavior. They realized the risks only lead to a high consumption of soda. So, buying energy drinks showed a sharp decline markedly since the early 2000s.

Quotation:

“Over the course of 2011, soda saw its sales slip by a full percent, and 1.5% if you don’t include energy drinks. But that’s not to say that Big Soda is underwater–it’s still a billion dollar industry, and energy drinks are helping to keep it afloat–however, it has shown a marked decline since the mid-2000s, when consumers started to turn their attention to healthier (or healthier-seeming) alternatives, like water and flavored waters, and bottle teas.

Per capita, Americans are consuming the lowest number of carbonated beverages in 25 years, which is great news for our hearts, brains, livers, and yes, waists. That said, the average American still consumes about 714 eight-ounce servings (or about 476 cans) of soda per year–which is well over a can a day. of either regular or diet sodas, which can actually lead to weight gain, bloating, and, you know, heart attacks. Which is a lot. That’s a lot of soda.”

Responding to public outcry over the unappetizing meat product, Kroger, Safeway and Stop & Shop have both joined Whole Foods, A&P, and Costco in the decision to no longer sell ground beef that contains the controversial ingredient. McDonald’s, Burger King, and Taco Bell have all also stopped carrying beef products which contain the ingredient, which is also known as “lean finely-textured beef.”

• DEARDORFF, Julie. Kids who play sports eat more junk food: Study, Chicago Tribune, March 20th 2012.

Abstract:

This article highlights the results of a study showing that the sport is almost synonymous with junk food.

Quotation:

“We parents like to believe that signing the kids up for soccer, hockey and other sports can keep them lean and fit.
But there’s a surprising lack of evidence showing that sports participation prevents obesity in children, according to a recent review of the existing research. In fact, kids who play sports are more likely to eat fast food, drink soda and consume more total calories overall, according to the article published in Current Sports Medicine Reports, a journal of the American College of Sports Medicine.”

Big food : Health, Culture and the evolution of eating

Big food: Health, Culture and the evolution of eating. Peabody.Yale.Edu.

Abstract:

For two days, the Yale Rudd Center website is promoting an exhibition named "Big food". It aims to show the evolution of feeding behavior in relation to the evolution of society. It runs from February 11 to December 2, 2012 at Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History.

Quotation:
“Food is fundamental to life. Yet, our eating habits have become incredibly complex, involving many aspects of daily life far beyond addressing simple nutritional needs. The increased consumption of unhealthy food and sedentary lifestyles mean excess weight and obesity now surpass under-nourishment as the world's leading food and nutrition problem. Big Food  begins with a startling visual of the amount of food the average American eats and finishes with a challenge for visitors to reflect on their role in personal and community health and the sustainability of our food system. In between it examines behavioral choice in nutrition and exercise as well as the influence of social, environmental, and cultural settings. Using an engaging multi-media and family-friendly approach, visitors will investigate our origins as hunter-gatherers; explore societal pressures such as the progressive growth of portion sizes; tackle media influences on food preferences; and consider serious health consequences that have increased the burden of chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.”

Best Nontraditional French Cuisine In San Francisco, CBC San Francisco, March 21, 2012.

Abstract: this article presents history of French cuisine, and the best French restaurant in San Francisco.

Quotation: "French food may be many things: elegant, rustic, complex, and rich; but the one thing that always holds true is that it is borne of an incomparable attention to detail and speaks to the pride the French take in the cuisine’s peerless reputation. For the French, food is a way of life.
What we know as traditional French food, or haute cuisine, dates back to the 17th century when La Varenne published what is widely accepted as the first true French cookbook. In the late 19th century, Georges Auguste Escoffier took on the task of modernizing and organizing what would become the national cuisine of France through separating cooking stations and publishing a series of articles in professional journals embracing the service a la russe (serving meals in separate courses on individual plates).
