What if We Occupied Language?

By SAMY A, The New-York TimeDecember 21, 2011.

Abstract : Returns to the social movement "occupy" and makes its historical. Explains how language can evolute contingent on the current affairs and cultural events

Extract : "In a very short time, this movement has dramatically changed how we think about occupation. In early September, “occupy” signaled on-going military incursions. Now it signifies progressive political protest. It’s no longer primarily about force of military power; instead it signifies standing up to injustice, inequality and abuse of power. It’s no longer about simply occupying a space; it’s about transforming that space."

Abstract : Recounts an electoral speech by Obama. Points up that he include in it some of the "occupy" protesters demand.

"Extract" : "There's much to say about this speech. It is, for instance, Obama's clearest attempt to weave an economic narrative that can carry him through the campaign. But perhaps the most obvious thing to say about it is that this isn't Obama's narrative. It's Occupy Wall Street's narrative. The speech is substantially about inequality."

Cinderella [Cendrillon]

By "Royal Opera House".
Thursday, 29 December 2011

Abstract : Presents Opera Room international in London, in England.
For the first time ever, The Royal Opera presents the story of Cinderella as told in Massenet’s opera Cendrillon.

Extract : "The production, new to the Royal Opera House, is by Laurent Pelly, whose previous work here has included the spectacularly successful La Fille du régiment, a heart-warming L’elisir d’amore and last Season’s stylish new Manon. Pelly brings his characteristic lightness of touch, wit and elegance to Massenet’s delightfully tuneful score against sets and costumes of fairytale charm. Joyce DiDonato takes the title role, with Alice Coote – just like the Principal Boy familiar from British pantomime – as her Prince Charming. And there has of course to be a fairy godmother, played by Eglise Gutiérrez, in this version of a tale that gained particular popularity from the published fairytales of Frenchman Charles Perrault. Musical highlights include the fairy godmother’s airy coloratura, the orchestral dances of the ball, the March of the Princesses, and of course rapturous duets between the Prince and Cendrillon. French music specialist Bertrand de Billy is the conductor for an opera of radiance and charm."

Die Meistersinger Von Nurnberg, Royal Opera House

By "LondonNet".
Monday, 26 December 2011

Abstract : Presents Opera Room international in London, in England.
The colour, characters and vibrant life of medieval Nuremberg are at the heart of Wagner's glorious opera and Graham Vick's popular production, last staged by The Royal Opera in 2002.

Extract : "This revival by the Company is an opportunity to hear one of the highlights of the entire opera repertory, with a fine cast and the full forces of the Royal Opera Chorus and the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House under the direction of Music Director Antonio Pappano. The entire community of Nuremberg is the setting for the story of challenges and triumphs - of art and of the heart - with Eva and Walther at the centre, under the encouragement of Hans Sachs. Wagner's music is in turns dramatic, reflective, energetic and sublime, with a conclusion that is as musically overwhelming as it is emotionally uplifting. Philosophy and art, love and wit: Die Meistersinger creates one of the most complete and satisfying worlds of any opera."

High Notes and Low Points for Classical Music

DANIEL J. WAKINHigh Notes and Low Points for Classical MusicThe New York TimesDecember 22, 2011.

Abstract : This holiday season brings a set of gifts for the world of classical music, in the form of the highly uncoveted and arbitrarily granted Special Awards for 2011. It was a year of financial hardship for the arts (what year isn’t?), especially for many opera houses, symphony orchestras, festivals and chamber music organizations, but high points also abounded. The following 10 prizes are bestowed in no particular order.

Extract : "BIGGEST FINANCIAL WOE The competition was intense. The Syracuse and New Mexico symphonies folded. The Louisville Orchestra spent much of the year in bankruptcy proceedings and suspended concerts for the fall. The Utica Symphony also fell silent. Even the storied Philadelphia Orchestra sought bankruptcy protection, unheard of for such a major ensemble. Philadelphia shares the prize with the New York City Opera, which moved out of Lincoln Center to save money, cut its budget by nearly two-thirds and is struggling with its orchestra and chorus over its proposal for a drastic reduction in work. A federal mediator has stepped in."

Don Giovanni, Royal Opera House

By "LondonNet".
Monday, 26 December 2011

Abstract : Presents Opera Room international in London, in England.
As part of the Royal Opera House's Olympic Programme, The Royal Opera stages a cycle of all three operas written by Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, beginning with the most fiery and flamboyant of them all: Don Giovanni.

Extract : "As part of the Royal Opera House's Olympic Programme, The Royal Opera stages a cycle of all three operas written by Mozart and librettist Lorenzo da Ponte, beginning with the most fiery and flamboyant of them all: Don Giovanni. Pursued by his victims and their outraged relatives, the serial seducer of the title is intent on yet further sexual conquests. But his luck eventually runs out when the statue of a man he murdered invites itself for dinner. The double casting brings some familiar star names back to Covent Garden - Gerald Finley and Erwin Schrott share the title role - and some new ones, all under the musical direction of conductor Constantinos Carydis. Beautiful arias, disarming duets and dramatic ensembles characterize the range of Mozart's score, and irony and wit bring a sharp brilliance to a drama with serious undertones. Francesca Zambello's production teems with energy as Don Giovanni loves, charms, lies and fights his way through life on his way to final retribution. The flames of Hell take truly tangible form in a production with the heat turned right up in the music, the drama and on stage!
